A healthier substitute of white sugar

Coconut sugar as an alternative to regular white sugar 

Sugar obtained from coconut palm is considered a healthier substitute for white sugar. It includes inulin, i.e. fiber slowing down the absorption of saccharides. Coconut sugar contains trace amounts of nutritious elements, such as iron, zinc, calcium, and potassium. However, to cover a daily demand for these minerals, you would have to consume half a glass of coconut sugar. 

Coconut sugar is a natural prebiotic, meaning that it ”feeds” good bacteria in the intestine and encourages their multiplication.


Coconut sugar in your healthy diet 

Although coconut sugar contains precious elements, it is as calorific as traditional white sugar. It raises blood sugar level to a lesser degree, yet still comprises fructose. If consumed too much of in a diet, it leads to obesity and metabolic diseases. Therefore, coconut sugar, similarly to the white one, has to be consumed reasonably. A daily portion of it in your healthy diet should not exceed 6 teaspoons.

The taste of coconut t sugar resembles cane sugar. When added, it turns desserts slightly nutty in color.

The glycemic index for coconut sugar ranges from 35 to 42 GI (depending on the producer). To compare – white sugar’s GI is exactly 60.
